EOP Counseling

EOP has eight full-time, professional counselors who are committed to the academic success of students. Counselors provide academic, career and personal counseling as well as facilitate academic success workshops on topics such as campus resources, note-taking, time management, test taking, stress reduction, career exploration, relationships and interpersonal communication. Counselors also teach University Seminar classes designed for EOP Learning Communities students.

Ms. Clay Majors has been a counselor with the EOP department since 2000, previously working in the College of Business for fourteen years. Much of her expertise lies in the area of program development and implementation. She has been the coordinator for the developmental and academic components of the EOP B.E.S.T. Summer Bridge Program and created and implemented the SOAR (Success, Opportunity, Academics, Relationships) Program for EOP. She has been instrumental in the creation of EOP Learning Communities, working with other campus departments to provide a structured and supportive learning environment for students. She teaches University Seminar courses for EOP students as well.

Ms. Clay Majors was the co-founder and chair for the African American Faculty Staff Scholarship. She has provided diversity training for the campus as well as for other organizations, and as a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors (NACADA) has made a number of presentations at the organization’s regional and national conferences.

As a graduate of LEAD San Diego, Ms. Clay Majors has been active in the community via board memberships with the YWCA and the Community Development Corporation (CEDA). She is one of the founding members of the Golden ANKH Association, an organization dedicated to the educational development and support of African American high school girls.

Ms. Alvarado has been a counselor with the EOP department since 1991. Previously she worked for seventeen years as a psychological counselor with Counseling and Psychological Services. Ms. Alvarado focuses her time on meeting with students and advising them regarding their academic success. She also enjoys the student contact and interaction she gets from teaching University Seminar classes for EOP students.

Ms. Alvarado has been an active speaker to Latina sororities such as, Lambda Sigma Gamma, and Alpha Pi Sigma. She has been the Advisor to the Nu Alpha Kappa fraternity since 1994 which she finds to be a very satisfying and worthwhile endeavor.

Ms. Jini Hogg joined the EOP team in Spring 2008 and hails from San Francisco, California. She worked in Athletic Academic Support Services for four years at San Diego State and two years at Grossmont College providing student advising and academic mentoring. Jini loves to work side by side with students to help them clarify and reach their goals, which motivated her to obtain her advance degree in counseling.

Ms. Hogg is a former track & field student-athlete with All American honors. She was a vital component to SDSU’s sprint team, especially the 400 meters. By setting high goals and prioritizing her time to study hard and meet her goals, she has gained insight into how students go about making the most of their educational planning.

Ms. Crawford has been a counselor with the EOP department since 1986. Prior to working with EOP she was at Student Outreach Services for three years. She has been the BEST Summer Bridge Academic Coordinator, and servises on the BEST administrative team. She has also coordinated the SOAR Mentoring Program for EOP. 

Ms. Crawford is active in the campus community as well. She has been the Lambda Sigma Gamma advisor for over twelve years, a multicultural sorority at SDSU. Every year she facilitates at TEAM SDSU, a weekend leadership conference for all fraternity and sorority presidents at SDSU. Ms. Crawford also serves on the Student Grievance Committee for the Office of the Ombudsman, an office that investigates and resolves student concerns. Mr. Flor has been working in Student Affairs for EOP for over 30 years and is the Head Counselor for the program. He has been involved in many EOP programs including the development of EOP Learning Communities, recruitment and outreach, admissions, screening and selection, counseling and advising, Explore SDSU, First Contact, and Summer Bridge . He also teaches a University Seminar course for EOP students. He has served on various campus committees in promoting EOP and integrating services both in student affairs and academic departments.

On campus Mr. Flor is the advisor for several student organizations including Andres Bonifacio SAMAHAN, Asian Pacific Student Alliance, Pacific Islander Student Association and the Chinese Martial Arts Club. In the community he has been involved with FILAMEDA (Filipino American Educators Association concerned with educational opportunities K-16), KCS (KALUSUGAN Community Services), Fil-Am Wellness Center (Promoting health and wellness programs), and FAWNS (Filipino American Historical Society, San Diego Chapter), Union of Pan Asian Communities, SDSU Asian Pacific Alumni Chapter and the Samahan Alumni Chapter.

Mildred (Millie) Robinson has been at San Diego State University for over 30 years. Prior to being a counselor with the EOP department, she worked in several departments within the Division of Student Affairs including, Admissions and Records and Student Outreach Services. In addition to her counseling responsibilities, she has coordinated the tutoring services for EOP students, provided outreach and access services to future EOP students, taught Freshman Seminar courses, and conducted diversity training for the campus and other organizations. Ms. Robinson designed, promoted and implemented the comprehensive First Contact program for EOP students as well. Ms. Robinson also teaches University Seminar courses for EOP students.

Ms. Her joined the EOP team in 2008.  Previously, she worked at UC San Diego in the History Department as the Undergraduate Advisor and in the Chemistry/Biochemistry Department as both the Undergraduate and Graduate Advisor.  While pursuing her Master’s degree at UCLA, she interned at West Los Angeles College where she helped advise community college students about transferring to four-year universities. 

She is a member of the National Association of Academic Advisors (NACADA) and National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).  Additionally, she is a trained Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) member.

Ms. Her’s experience as a first-generation college graduate and her experience working with CREATE (Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment, and Teaching Excellence) motivated her to pursue a career in student services to help students realize their academic, career, and personal goals.  Ms. Her is committed to student success and encourages students to utilize the support services and resources available to help them achieve academic and personal success.
